Family law has two main aspects. The first aspect is preventative measures; this means recognizing and planning for a potential break up of a marriage or common law union before it happens. The second aspect is damage control. Assets and family property need to be divided, monetary support and maintenance issues need to be discussed, and any protection issues need to be made a priority and dealt with urgently. If children are involved, even amicable separations could get complicated. That is why it is important to contact a lawyer as soon as possible. Trying to dissolve a union on your own can cause financial and emotional damage, and it can put your children at risk. |

We accept legal aid certificates from Legal Aid Ontario (LAO). Ontario residents are eligible for assistance from LAO in obtaining a lawyer if:
- After paying for basic needs such as housing and food they have little to no money left; and if
- Their legal problem cannot possibly be resolved by duty counsel.
Applicants first have to take a financial test to establish if they are entitled for free legal services or if they have any assets that can be applied toward repaying LAO. Those who own property or have some money may be required to enter into a contribution agreement with LAO to repay all or a portion of their legal fees.
